Session Hosting

🙏 Thank you for agreeing to be a Session Host!

Below you will find a few tips and best practices to make sure that your Session is successful and as stress and glitch free as possible.

If you’d like to volunteer to host additional sessions, please click the “✋ Volunteer to Host” button in the lower right corner of this page or simply DM or email me!

 Before Show Time

You have been designated as Host of the event. That means that only you have the ability to start and stop the Session.

If for some reason you are unable to start the Session, please contact Dave ASAP via WhatsApp.

The 🦎 Monday lounge Lizard Sessions and the Wed-Fri ♠️ Shut Up & Shuffle Sessions are not recorded.

The ⏰ Tuesday Study Session will be recorded automatically when the host opens the room and the video will be posted in the original events post after the session closes.

Show Time

To begin, from within the community simply navigate to your Session in the Upcoming Events space:

The “Join this stream” button will be available 25 minutes before the start of the event. As Host you can go “Backstage” before the event begins.

Depending on the browser you use (Chrome is recommended) you may be asked for permission to use your camera and mic.

From the next screen you can adjust and choose your preferred audio and video inputs. When you’re happy with the look and sound click the “Enter Backstage” button.

Once Backstage, before you take the room “Live,” it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the various controls along the bottom. Nothing there is too complicated and the various icons speak for themselves: Settings, Mic, Camera, Screen Share, Raise Hand, Text Chat, and Participants.

Pro Tip: From within the participants panel, you can mute someone’s mic if there is lots of background noise. In fact, It’s a good idea to ask folks who aren’t speaking to mute. It helps to reduce echo as well.

At the scheduled time hit the Go Live button and start having fun! Remember, as host of the Monday, Wed, Thur, and Fri sessions you are not expected to officiate the meeting or facilitate the discussion. Just let it unfold naturally and organically. At the end of the hour say goodbye and hit End Stream.

Pro Tip: If you need to leave the session before the allotted time, or if the discussion seems like it should continue past the hour, you can leave the room by clicking the “Leave Room” button on the lower left and the session will go on without you. The room will automatically close down 5 minutes after the last participant signs off.

🙏 Thank you, once again, for sharing your time! Have a great session and I’ll see you in Sleight School!

Tech Tips:

• Contrast - Make sure you are using props (coins, cups, cards, etc) that will not “blow out” and be difficult to read under your current lighting. You may need to adjust your lights (draping with cloth or gels) or color of surface, close up mat or tablecloth.

• Autofocus - practice using your autofocus….it is working consistently? Or going in and out? Do you need it turned on?

Sleight School member and award winning cinematographer Larry Fong wrote an excellent article in which he gives good advice for getting the best out of your online video conferencing setup. You can read it HERE.

• Emergency Contact - In case the livestream goes down, is there a way to text you quickly? If you are using your mobile phone for your livestream, then is there an alternate way to text/chat you? If you haven’t already done so, please join the Sleight School WhatsApp Group Chat HERE.
